Our Fractured World
With these recent paintings I wish to simply depict the beauty, sometimes fury, of where I live: the Skagit Valley and San Juan Islands. But because this is now, and we have truly begun to know what has been lost, and might still be lost, I’ve rendered each one as if aged, some with lines of spiderwebbing fracture, like a close-up of the cracks and fault lines in a brooding Goya. As I worked it became clear to me that these lines of fracture might equally represent unseen lines of deep connectivity. December 2020
